Full deep dive: Mastra Architecture Breakdown

Mastra is the first production-grade TypeScript agent framework — built by the Gatsby team, funded by Y Combinator ($13M, January 2026), and growing at a pace that suggests it's filling a real gap. With 300,000+ weekly npm downloads and 22,000+ GitHub stars, it's becoming the default choice for JavaScript and TypeScript developers who need agents in web applications.

Why TypeScript Needed Its Own Framework

The Python agent ecosystem has LangChain, LangGraph, PydanticAI, DSPy, and CrewAI. The TypeScript ecosystem had approximately nothing production-ready before Mastra. This matters because the majority of web developers write TypeScript, and agents embedded in web applications need to run in Node.js or Vercel Edge environments — not Python services bolted on the side.

Architecture

Agents

The core primitive: an LLM-backed entity with tools, memory, and (optionally) structured output schemas. Agents are defined in TypeScript with full type inference — tool parameters, return types, and memory structures are all typed.

Tools

Type-safe function definitions with Zod schemas for input/output validation. Mastra generates the JSON schema for the LLM automatically from the Zod types. Tools can be shared across agents or imported from external packages.

Workflows

A graph-based execution engine for multi-step pipelines. Workflows define steps, their dependencies, and branching logic. Unlike simple sequential chains, Mastra workflows support parallel execution, conditional branches, and suspension (pause and resume — useful for human-in-the-loop patterns). Steps can be synchronous or async.

Memory: Observational Memory

Mastra's most distinctive feature. Rather than naive RAG (embed everything, retrieve top-k), Observational Memory uses a two-tier system:

  • Working memory — recent context held in the context window
  • Long-term memory — structured semantic search using pgvector or Upstash Vector

The key difference from standard RAG: Mastra can observe all tool calls and agent interactions and selectively surface relevant past context based on semantic similarity — without embedding every message. The reported result is 4–10x token cost reduction vs. naive RAG for long-running agent sessions.

Integrations

Mastra ships with 50+ pre-built integrations (GitHub, Slack, Airtable, Notion, Google Calendar, etc.) as typed TypeScript packages. Each integration is a set of tool definitions ready to drop into an agent. This reduces the most tedious part of agent development: writing tool wrappers for third-party APIs.

RAG Pipeline

A first-class RAG module with chunking, embedding, indexing (pgvector, Pinecone, Qdrant, Upstash), and retrieval. Tight integration with Observational Memory means retrieval can be triggered automatically rather than requiring explicit RAG calls.
